Upcycling an old pine cupboard door to a beautiful chalk painted peacock door.
By using Annie Sloan chalk paints, stencils, and shimmering gold leaf (inspired by French interiors) a bold and beautiful art piece is created.
A Special Thanks to Claire from Mon Petit Palais

I wouldn’t have discovered the possibilities of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint without Claire from Mon Petit Palais. Claire introduced me to the power of this paint. If you haven’t explored her work, she’s a true artist when it comes to transforming furniture with elegance and character.

At Tartan Paint, we love trying new things and this piece was inspired by Claire at Mon Petit Palais. This latest project is one of my favourites—a tired pine kitchen cupboard was transformed by painting a French-inspired peacock, using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, gold leaf, and decorative stencils.

This project was was a chance to experiment with layering colours, textures, and metallic accents to create something a bit unique. Inspired by French interiors, I wanted to give the piece a sense of old-world charm, while adding a bold, modern twist with the vibrant peacock motif.

The Process – A Blend of Techniques
1. Base Coat with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
• I started by prepping the surface with a light sanding—no primer needed.
• The first layer was a soft, muted shade to create a classic French base, applied with sweeping brushstrokes for texture.
2. Stencilling & Peacock Design
• I used multiple stencils to build up depth, incorporating ornate motifs around the frame to mimic vintage French furniture.
• The peacock design was hand-painted, blending rich blues, deep greens, and shimmering golds to capture its regal beauty.
3. Gold Leaf Accents
• To enhance the luxury feel, I applied delicate sheets of gold leaf to highlight details and edges, catching the light beautifully.
• Gold wax was added to the carved areas to create a subtle aged patina.
4. Finishing Touches
• A coat of clear wax sealed the piece, enhancing the colours while providing durability.
• Light distressing on the edges gave it that authentic, timeworn look.

Claire introduced me to the endless possibilities of upcycling and the power of chalk paint so if you have a bit of passion and a bit of creative courage, have a crack!

Feeling Inspired? Try It Yourself!

Whether you’re rescuing an old cupboard, a chair, or a picture frame, chalk paint, stencils, and a touch of gold can bring any piece back to life!

There’s something magical about painting by the sea—the fresh air, the sound of the waves, and the energy of a group coming together to create. That’s exactly why we have had such fun with our team-building workshops so whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned artist, these sessions are all about fun and creativity. The workshops are designed to be engaging, relaxed, and most importantly, a great laugh. It’s about stepping away from the usual office setting and embracing a hands-on experience where every team member gets to express themselves on canvas. Each workshop is designed around a playful, creative theme. It could be:🎨 Seascapes & Sunsets – Inspired by the beauty of the beach🐄 Scottish Wildlife Meets Australia – Highland coos with a local twist🎭 Abstract & Bold – Let loose with colour and expression With Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, mixed media techniques, and a few secret tricks up my sleeve, everyone leaves with a unique piece of art—and maybe a few paint splatters to show for it! The best part? You don’t need to be an artist. Some of the best pieces come from those who’ve never painted before. No […]

Creative Workshops with a Splash of Fun!

It could be:
🎨 Seascapes & Sunsets – Inspired by the beauty of the beach
🐄 Scottish Wildlife Meets Australia – Highland coos with a local twist
🎭 Abstract & Bold – Let loose with colour and expression

With Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, mixed media techniques, and a few secret tricks up my sleeve, everyone leaves with a unique piece of art—and maybe a few paint splatters to show for it!

The best part? You don’t need to be an artist. Some of the best pieces come from those who’ve never painted before. No pressure, no perfection—just creativity and a good time. By the end, teams leave feeling refreshed, inspired, and more connected than ever.

We took printed this on a small canvas and took it to the Armadale Highland Games and it went off to a new home! Turns out, there’s no shortage of wummin worthy of this honour. Printed on a small canvas, it’s got a bit of a punch– the texture, the bold colours, and that unmistakable Scottish pride make it a proper standout. We love seeing folk connect with our art, and this one’s a favourite because we all know a wummin who is a little bit amazing. If you know someone who deserves a big “Yer Some Wummin” we can print more – just let us know!
