Buying Scottish Christmas gifts for someone who left Scotland years ago is trickier than it looks. They've swapped sleet for a 38 degree Christmas Day and a prawn or two on the barbie, yet show them a Highland coo with its fringe in its eyes and they go a wee bit misty. Caroline is one of those Scots, painting away in Perth with her pal Claire, so we've had plenty of practice at this one.
What are the best Scottish Christmas gifts?
The best ones either make someone laugh or take them straight back home. A Highland cow painting manages both, which is probably why Caroline can't paint them fast enough. A card with a proper Scots saying does the same job for six dollars, and an art print sits nicely in between. Anything with a saltire slapped on it tends to end up in a drawer by February.
What can I buy a Scottish person living in Australia?
Think about what they actually miss. For some it's the patter, so a card that tells them Yer No Deid Yet on their birthday lands better than any poem ever written. For others it's the hills and the coos, and that's where original art and prints come in. Buying from a Scottish artist here in Australia also means no overseas postage and no parcel stuck in customs while Christmas creeps closer.
Can I buy Australian made Scottish gifts?
Aye, every one of ours is. Caroline paints the originals in Perth and all our cards and prints come from her own artwork. Original paintings come with free delivery anywhere in the Perth metro area.
Can I send a Scottish Christmas card straight to the person?
You can. When you order cards from us you can have one sent directly to the person, which saves you a trip to the post office and stops the card sitting on your kitchen bench until New Year. Our Scottish Santa Christmas card is a favourite for exactly this. Order four or more cards and the postage is free.
Left it a wee bit late?
Our digital downloads are nine dollars and you can print them at home the same day. Nobody needs to know.
Whatever you choose, get your order in early. Australia Post gets busy in December and nobody wants their Christmas card turning up at Hogmanay, though to be fair that would be a very Scottish thing to happen.
