Highland cow art has taken over a fair few Australian living rooms, and we can't say we're surprised. Caroline has been painting Highland coos in Perth for years now and every one of them seems to arrive with its own opinion. Some look wise. Some look like they've just been told the pub is shut.
What makes Highland cow art so popular?
It's the face. Or really, the lack of one, since half of it is usually hidden behind a big ginger fringe. Highland cows have shaggy coats, sweeping horns and an expression that sits somewhere between patient and unimpressed, which makes them brilliant to paint. They're unmistakably Scottish but they also suit bright colour and a bit of cheek, so a Highland cow painting can feel playful without looking like a souvenir.
Are Highland cows Scottish?
They are. The breed comes from the Scottish Highlands and the Western Isles, where it grew up coping with sideways rain and the odd hailstorm. Highland cattle are one of the oldest registered breeds anywhere, and you'll now find small herds on farms right across Australia too.
Why are Highland cows so hairy?
That coat is two coats really. A long oily outer layer keeps the rain off, and a soft woolly undercoat underneath keeps them warm. It's perfect for a February morning on Skye and slightly less perfect for a February afternoon in Perth, which is why Australian coos tend to get a good summer trim.
Why are they called Highland coos?
Coo is simply how a cow sounds in Scots. Say it with a Glasgow accent and you'll have it. Most Scots will call them coos without thinking, which is why you'll see both words all through our shop.
What does a Highland cow represent?
For a lot of people a Highland cow means home. It stands for Scotland, for being tough enough to handle the weather, and for not taking life too seriously. That's a big part of why people with Scottish roots love having one on the wall.
Why do Highland cows work so well in home decor?
A Highland cow painting gives a room a focal point and a sense of humour at the same time. Caroline's coos come in bold pinks, teals and oranges, so they sit happily in a modern white room or a house that already has far too many colours going on.
